Over the years, Xiaomi has done a great job of creating a skin for Android called MIUI. While it provides a good experience for the most part, it is sometimes difficult to perform certain actions unlike stock Android. For example, it is not easy to clear the memory in MIUI. There are different ways hidden below.
In this article, we have mentioned five effective ways to free up storage space on your Mi device. These proven methods helped us save several gigabytes without sacrificing functionality. Also, these steps work on all Poco and Redmi devices. Here is a step-by-step guide for all these methods.
The pre-installed security app is very useful for cleaning the memory of your MIUI device. Here’s how you can use a cleaner to free up space fast.
Step 1: Open the security app on your device.
Step 2: Click on the cleaner.
After it runs the scan, it shows you the space you can save under the name “Trash Size”.
step 3: Now click on Clear. This will clear the data from the scan.
This method can be useful for freeing up space regularly. Besides, it won’t take much time. The following few sections of articles will help you to clear the cache and other residual files.
2. Delete large files with built-in Deep Clean
In the Security app, you also get a Deep Clean option. This feature helps to clear internal memory on MIUI devices. But while you’re deleting these files, be careful to double-check what these files actually mean. If it’s not videos and other media files, it’s files related to updates and backups.
So, only follow this method if you don’t plan to restore your backup quickly.
Step 1: Open the security program and click on Deep Clean.
step 2: Click on Large files.
step 3: Now select large files.
A note: All files named “mgstore…”. these are local WhatsApp chat backups configured for automatic backup. So, if you don’t plan to restore them, select those files to delete. This will not delete your WhatsApp chat messages.
Step 4: Click Delete selected files.
As you can see, these files took up almost 4 GB of device memory. You can do this regularly to free up space and even disable automatic backup for WhatsApp to avoid this.
3. Clean up duplicate files
Another effective way to clean up memory in MIUI is to delete duplicate and redundant files. This involves installing the FX File Explorer app from the Play Store. Here is the step by step procedure for the same.
Before proceeding with the process, download and install the program from the link below.
Step 1: Open FX File Explorer and select Cleaning Tools.
step 2: Now select Remove Duplicates.
step 3: After the program finishes scanning, click the delete icon to remove duplicate files.
4. Clear the Gallery app storage
The gallery app on MIUI devices is notorious for hoarding over gigabytes of memory for thumbnails and other residual data. As you can see in the screenshot below, the gallery app takes about 1.3 GB of data.
Unfortunately, there is no way to clear this even in the app settings. However, there is a workaround that requires a few extra steps. Here’s how you can use it to clear memory in MIUI.
A note: This will not delete your photos or videos.
Step 1: Click on the link below to download the APK file for the gallery app. The site we recommend here is a safe and reputable source for downloading APKs.
step 2: Click the “here” button on the download page if the download does not start automatically.
step 3: Open the downloaded file and click “Settings” in the pop-up window.
Step 4: Enable “Allow from this source”.
step 5: Click Update.
Step 6: Now, on your home screen, long press the Gallery app icon.
Step 7: Click Program Information.
Step 8: Select Remove updates.
Step 8: Select OK to confirm.
As you can see, most of the data has been removed from the Gallery app.
5. Clear the app cache
Applications tend to accumulate a lot of cache files over time. Although there is a limit to how much cache you can store on any device, and you can’t exceed it, you can clear your cache regularly to keep enough space.
There are two main ways to clear cache on Mi devices. You can clean it separately from the programs or remove it immediately. However, the second option requires the installation of a third-party application.
I. Clear app cache individually
Step 1: Open Settings and tap About phone.
step 2: Go to the vault.
step 3: Now tap on Apps and data.
Step 4: Select the app from the list for which you want to clear the cache.
step 5: Tap Clear cache.
Step 6: Click OK to confirm.
II. Clear the app cache immediately
It becomes tedious to clear the cache for individual programs. But there is an app called Activity Launcher in the Play Store that will help you clear it right away. You can install it from the link below.
Step 1: Open the app and tap Settings.
step 2: Now click on Storage. Make sure you click on the button with the keyword “StorageDashboardActivity”.
step 3: You will be taken to the hidden “Storage” menu. Once there, select Cached Data.
step 5: Click OK to confirm.
That’s all you need to do to clear your cache right away. Apart from the above steps, you can always delete downloads in Streaming apps as they take up a lot of space. Have more questions? Go to the next section
